Why Am I Not Getting CSD RFQs? 7 Reasons Your Business Isn’t Being Invited to Quote

Registered on the Central Supplier Database but your inbox stays empty? Here’s what’s usually going wrong behind the scenes — and how to fix it.

Registering on the Central Supplier Database (CSD) is the entry ticket to government procurement in South Africa — without it, no organ of state can award you a tender or even send you a Request for Quotation (RFQ). But plenty of registered, verified suppliers still find their RFQ inbox stays quiet month after month. If that’s you, the cause is almost always one of the following.

1. Your Commodity Codes Are Wrong or Too Narrow

RFQs are matched to suppliers based on the commodity codes selected on your CSD profile. If you only chose one or two broad codes when you registered, the system simply never matches you to relevant requests outside that narrow scope. Go back into your profile and select every commodity code that genuinely applies to what your business supplies — not just the most obvious one.

2. Your CSD Status Isn’t “Compliant”

The CSD pulls live data directly from SARS, CIPC, and Home Affairs. If there’s an outstanding tax return, unpaid tax debt, or a CIPC compliance issue on record, your profile can quietly sit as non-compliant — and non-compliant suppliers are excluded from RFQ distribution even if the rest of the profile looks complete. There’s no workaround on the CSD side; the underlying issue has to be resolved with SARS or CIPC directly.

3. Your Profile Has Missing or Outdated Information

Missing banking details, an expired B-BBEE certificate, or an unverified email and phone number can each cause the system to skip your business when it compiles the supplier list for a given RFQ.

4. You’re Not on That Specific Buyer’s List

Being on the national CSD doesn’t automatically put you in front of every organ of state. Many departments, municipalities, and state-owned entities keep their own supplier portals or preferred-supplier lists in addition to CSD. If you want RFQs from a specific entity, you may need to register with them directly as well.

5. Low RFQ Volume or High Competition in Your Category

Some commodity categories simply generate far fewer RFQs than others, or attract hundreds of competing suppliers for the same request. A fully compliant, correctly coded profile can still only receive a handful of invitations a month if that’s the nature of the category.

6. Your Profile Is Flagged as Restricted

It’s worth checking that your business isn’t listed on National Treasury’s Restricted Supplier & Tender Defaulter register. A restricted listing blocks RFQ invitations entirely, regardless of how complete the rest of your profile is.

7. You’re Only Watching CSD and Missing Other Channels

RFQs and tenders are also published on eTenders.gov.za and on individual entities’ own websites and portals. Relying on CSD invitations alone means missing opportunities that are advertised elsewhere but still require CSD registration and compliance to actually bid on.

What to Do About It

1. Log in to csd.gov.za and review — then expand — your commodity codes. This alone fixes it for most suppliers.
2. Check your compliance status tab for any flags tied to SARS or CIPC, and resolve them at the source.
3. Confirm your B-BBEE certificate, banking details, and contact information are current.
4. Register directly with the specific departments, municipalities, or state-owned entities you want to supply.
5. Search the Restricted Supplier & Tender Defaulter register to rule out a flag on your profile.
6. Check eTenders.gov.za and individual entity websites in addition to waiting on CSD invitations.
